galenics, pharmaceutical technology

Galenics (Galenik) is the science of the preparation and formulation of medicinal products. It deals with the development of dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, solutions, and creams, and how these affect the release and bioavailability of the active ingredient.

After the physician Galen of Pergamon (2nd century).

galenics, pharmaceutical technology

Galenics answers the question of how an active substance reaches its site of action: as a tablet, capsule, ointment, suppository, injection solution, or patch. It determines release, shelf life, and tolerability.

In the pharmacy degree programme it is the most practically formative subject: in the laboratory, formulations are actually manufactured — from syrups to sterile solutions.
