pharmacokinetics

Pharmacokinetics describes what the body does to a drug — how it is absorbed, distributed, metabolised, and eliminated. It is modelled using the LADME framework and forms the scientific basis for dosage regimens.

pharmacokinetics

Four steps are distinguished, summarised in the acronym LADME (or ADME): Liberation (release), Absorption (uptake), Distribution, Metabolism (transformation), and Excretion (elimination).

The counterpart is pharmacodynamics: it describes what the active substance does to the body. A useful mnemonic: kinetics is the journey, dynamics is the effect.
