Study Medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is primarily of interest to international applicants because the entire medical degree runs in English and no numerus clausus determines the study place. Four locations are available. They are located in Sarajevo, Mostar, and Foča, and they differ in price, size, and environment more than the short distances between them might suggest.

Sarajevo and Mostar

The International University of Sarajevo offers human medicine and dentistry in English and charges 13,750 EUR per year. The Sarajevo School of Science and Technology offers human medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy at its Sarajevo Medical School and costs 13,200 EUR per year. Both are private universities in the capital. The student body is international. The University of Mostar, School of Medicine teaches human medicine in English and costs 4,600 EUR per semester, or 9,000 BAM in the local currency. Mostar is significantly smaller than Sarajevo, has a Mediterranean character, and is closer to the Croatian Adriatic coast than to the Bosnian capital.

Foča as a Partner Location of Medschool Experts

The Faculty of Medicine Foča of the University of East Sarajevo is an official contract partner of Medschool Experts. It teaches human medicine and dentistry in English and costs 3,500 EUR per year. No other location in the Medschool Experts portfolio is more affordable. Foča is located in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the Drina River. The town is small. The faculty is affiliated with the local university hospital; the distances between lecture hall, ward, and accommodation are correspondingly short. Those looking for a major city will not be happy in Foča; those who want to be at the patient's side early and regularly will find good conditions there.

Who Bosnia and Herzegovina Is Right For

The country suits applicants who want to start quickly, are comfortable with English as the language of instruction, and need to keep an eye on their budget. One limitation must be put on the table from the start. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not an EU member; a degree from Bosnia and Herzegovina is not automatically recognized within the EU. This is not a minor point. Many students therefore transfer after the pre-clinical phase to a university within the European Union and complete their degree there. Anyone who plans this route from the outset is making an informed decision.

Tuition fees in Bosnia and Herzegovina range from 3,500 EUR to 13,750 EUR per year. The reason is straightforward. The Faculty of Medicine Foča of the University of East Sarajevo is part of the state University of East Sarajevo and charges 3,500 EUR per year. The University of Mostar, School of Medicine charges 4,600 EUR per semester, which amounts to 9,200 EUR per academic year. The Sarajevo School of Science and Technology costs 13,200 EUR per year, and the International University of Sarajevo 13,750 EUR per year. Both are private universities that finance themselves through their students' fees.

Living costs for students in Bosnia and Herzegovina are typically between 350 and 550 EUR per month. Sarajevo is more expensive. In Foča and Mostar the lower end of the range is usually sufficient. Accommodation, food, public transport, and mobile services are included; flights home, textbooks, and insurance come on top.

Example calculation for one academic year in Foča, to be understood as an estimate: 3,500 EUR in tuition fees per year plus approximately 400 EUR per month for accommodation and daily expenses, that is approximately 4,800 EUR per year. Together that comes to around 8,300 EUR for twelve months. The same calculation at the International University of Sarajevo looks different: 13,750 EUR in fees per year and approximately 550 EUR per month gives around 20,350 EUR. Both are estimates. They shift with accommodation type, trips home, and lifestyle, and they do not include a reserve for a potential later transfer to a university within the European Union.

The application in Bosnia and Herzegovina runs directly with the respective university, not through a central admissions office. There is no numerus clausus. The basis is your academic background, proof of sufficient English proficiency, and depending on the location, a selection interview or a subject-based entrance test oriented around biology and chemistry.

A general high school diploma or equivalent is not the only route in. You can also apply in Bosnia and Herzegovina with a vocational school diploma, and equally with a completed vocational qualification in a healthcare field, such as a nursing qualification. This is not automatic — the universities in Foča, Mostar, and Sarajevo review each case individually. The application window is typically in spring and summer, with studies starting in autumn. Because places are allocated location by location, applicants who only decide after completing school also have a chance. This should not be relied upon. Places for international students are limited at the Faculty of Medicine Foča of the University of East Sarajevo as well as at the private universities in Sarajevo.

The language of instruction at all four locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina is English; no language certificate other than English is required. Bosnian is not a prerequisite for admission, but it helps noticeably in everyday life and in conversations with patients. Anyone who picks up the national language in the first semesters alongside their studies will find the clinical phase easier.

Accommodation is comparatively affordable in Bosnia and Herzegovina, significantly more so in Foča and Mostar than in Sarajevo. Dormitory places and shared apartments are the norm, found through the university or through students in higher semesters. An international community exists, but it is smaller than in some other Eastern European countries. Those looking for connections will find them more readily in the international cohort than in a single national group. Travel is straightforward: Sarajevo and Mostar are well connected, and the Adriatic coast is within driving distance.
