Reicht kostenloses Material, um zu bestehen?

Für die Inhalte ja. Die ÖH Med Graz schreibt selbst, dass Vorbereitungskurse zum Bestehen nicht nötig sind, und die Koordinationsstelle TMS äußert sich zurückhaltend zum Nutzen kommerzieller Kurse. Was ein Kurs zusätzlich liefert, ist Struktur und Verbindlichkeit.

Was ist der TMSnat und betrifft er mich?

Ab Frühjahr 2027 ersetzt der TMSnat sowohl den klassischen TMS als auch den HAM-Nat. Er kombiniert Aufgaben aus beiden Verfahren und bringt einen eigenen Teil Naturwissenschaftliche Kenntnisse mit: 40 Aufgaben in 60 Minuten. Im Übergangsjahr 2027/28 zählt der TMSnat für 80 Prozent der Hamburger Plätze, der HAM-Nat noch für 20 Prozent.

Womit fange ich an, wenn ich bei null stehe?

Realistisch 150 bis 300 Stunden, verteilt über mehrere Monate. Wichtiger als die Summe ist die Verteilung: täglich 45 Minuten über vier Monate schlägt zwei Wochen Dauerpauken deutlich.

Kann ich österreichisches Material für den TMS oder HAM-Nat nutzen?

The Tests Compared

Three tests, one goal — and from 2027 they become one

Anyone preparing should first know what they are preparing for. The three major medical admissions tests in German-speaking countries test different skills — and the German component is currently being restructured.

TMS – Germany

Eight subtests, no subject-specific knowledge required: pattern recognition, basic scientific understanding, spatial reasoning, quantitative and formal problems, figure memorisation, fact memorisation, reading comprehension, and diagram and table interpretation. According to the test provider, the November 2026 sitting will be the last classic TMS.

MedAT – Austria

The only one of the three tests with a genuine subject-knowledge component: foundational biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics account for 40 percent, cognitive abilities a further 40 percent. Registration opens in March, test day in early July. The MedAT-Z additionally includes wire-bending and shape-mirroring tasks.

HAM-Nat – Hamburg and Magdeburg

Natural sciences at upper-secondary level, based on an official topic catalogue of over one hundred items, plus figural matrices, arithmetic problem-solving, and relational reasoning. The September 2026 sitting is expected to be the last HAM-Nat.

TMSnat from 2027 — what changes

The TMSnat merges TMS and HAM-Nat into a single process, held twice a year and repeatable as many times as needed. New is a dedicated ‘Natural Science Knowledge’ section with 40 questions in 60 minutes. In the 2027/28 transition year, the TMSnat counts for 80 percent of Hamburg places, the HAM-Nat still for 20 percent. Those starting now should weight science content significantly more heavily than in the classic TMS — the HAM-Nat topic catalogue is the best available guide to that material.

What the test doesn’t decide

A test result is a snapshot, not a verdict on your potential as a doctor. Across Europe, dozens of medical schools admit students without grade cutoffs or these tests — with degrees recognised internationally under EU Directive 2005/36/EC. This platform helps with the test. If it is not enough, there is still a path forward.

Frequently asked questions about test preparation

Is this really all free?

Yes. Every source in the directory is accessible without payment. Twelve entries require a free account – this is noted on the entry. Seventeen sources are under an open licence such as CC BY-SA and may even be reused. We have deliberately not included anything that costs money, not even as a recommendation.

Is free material enough to pass?

For content: yes. The test providers themselves say so in some cases openly – ÖH Med Graz writes that preparation courses are not necessary to pass, and the Koordinationsstelle TMS is reserved about the value of commercial courses. What a course additionally provides is structure and commitment. That is exactly what the study plan generator here is for.

What is the TMSnat and does it affect me?

From spring 2027, TMSnat replaces both the classic TMS and the HAM-Nat. It combines questions from both procedures and introduces its own section, “Natural Science Knowledge”: 40 questions in 60 minutes. In the transition year 2027/28, TMSnat counts for 80% of Hamburg places, while HAM-Nat still counts for 20%. If you are sitting in 2027 or later, this affects you – and you should invest significantly more time in subject knowledge than someone sitting the classic TMS in 2026 would have.

Where do I start if I'm starting from scratch?

With the official content list for your test: the topic catalogue for HAM-Nat and TMSnat, the keyword lists in the VMC for MedAT, the information brochure for TMS. Then sit a simulation without any preparation. The result is uncomfortable, and that is exactly why it is useful – it tells you where your time belongs. Only then start studying.

How many hours do I need?

Realistically 150 to 300 hours, spread over several months. More important than the total is the distribution: 45 minutes daily over four months beats two weeks of continuous cramming by a wide margin, because both the trainable subtests and factual knowledge depend on repetition. Can I use Austrian material for TMS or HAM-Nat?

Yes, and it is worthwhile. The ÖH Med Vienna scripts for biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics are the best freely available German-language summaries at this level. They largely cover the HAM-Nat topic catalogue and the new knowledge section of TMSnat. Conversely, the UKE's StavMat generator also helps with the MedAT subtest assembling figures.

Why is there also material from commercial providers here?

Because part of it is genuinely free. One publisher explicitly releases a complete MedAT simulation for free distribution; another puts half a TMS online as a PDF. This is good material, regardless of who made it. The entry always states what is free and where a paywall begins.

Do you earn from these links?

That is not a verdict on your suitability as a doctor.
